Travel via Helsinki

There are good flight connections to Finland from all parts of the world. Several international airlines offer regular flights to Helsinki. From Helsinki Airport https://www.finavia.fi/en/airports/helsinki-airport/access you can travel to Tampere either by train via Tikkurila station in 1.5–2,5 hours, or by bus directly from the airport in 2,5 hours.

Travelling by train

Commuter train lines I and P travel every ten minutes in opposite directions on a ring route between the airport station, located under the airport terminal, and Helsinki Central railway station https://www.hsl.fi/en/travelling/visitors/airport-train. The P-train takes you from the airport to Tikkurila station in eight minutes.

From Tikkurila station you can travel to Tampere either by an express train (InterCity or Pendolino) or a slower commuter train. Tampere trains leave the station at intervals of about 30 to 60 min.

Train ticket from Helsinki airport to Tampere can be purchased either online https://www.vr.fi/en or from the VR (State Railways) ticket vending machine at the station platform. Note that there are separate ticket machines for local traffic and express trains.

Due to dynamic pricing, express train tickets are cheaper the earlier you buy them. If the ticket is purchased just before the train departs, it usually costs up to around €30, but there is no upper limit, and it can be more expensive during rush hours.

If you accidentally board the I-train from the airport, continue all the way to the main railway station and get on the Tampere train from there.

Travelling by bus

Buses to Tampere leave just outside the airport arrivals terminal. Please click here https://www.matkahuolto.fi/en for the bus timetable search. The airport is called Helsinki-Vantaa.
